Like a regiment's standard, the drum was an important symbol to its corps. They were often decorated with the unit's insignia, coats of arms, or national symbols. In the late 18th century the National Eagle became ubiquitous and was emblazoned on everything from banners to buttons and was also affixed to military drums. The drums became known as "eagle drums" and in the 1840s, the United States Army attempted to standardize these decorations. Brilliant colors were used to render the device: the raptor and its shield, which was then ringed by stars on a blue field, and finally capped by a sunburst. Eagle drums were especially popular with the Union Army during the Civil War.
