The Fokker E.III Eindecker was a German monoplane fighter aircraft used during the early years of World War I. Introduced in 1915, it became famous for its synchronized machine gun system, which allowed pilots to fire directly through the spinning propeller without damaging the blades. This innovation gave German aviators a significant advantage during a period known as the "Fokker Scourge." Powered by a rotary engine, the E.III featured a simple wire-braced design with a single wing and open cockpit. Although not exceptionally fast or maneuverable by later standards, it was highly effective against contemporary aircraft. The E.III helped establish the fighter aircraft as a specialized combat type and played a crucial role in the evolution of aerial warfare.
Josef Jacobs was one of Germany's most successful fighter pilots during World War I, credited with 48 aerial victories. Born in 1894, he served in the Imperial German Air Service and became renowned for his exceptional flying skill, aggressive tactics, and distinctive black-painted aircraft. Jacobs achieved most of his victories while flying the Fokker Dr.I triplane, making him one of the aircraft's most successful pilots. Awarded Germany's highest military honor, the Pour le Mérite, he was respected by both comrades and opponents. After the war, Jacobs remained active in aviation and lived until 1978, becoming one of the last surviving German aces.
