About the Book
In 1754, Washington was an ambitious but inexperienced young officer carrying out orders on behalf of Virginia and the British Crown when his campaign helped spark the French and Indian War, part of the broader global Seven Years' War between Britain and France. Though the campaign fell short of its objectives, it gave Washington his first taste of military command and lessons that shaped the officer who would later lead the Continental Army. Historian Scott Patchan draws on Washington's correspondence to tell the story of his training as an officer.
