About the BMW R75
In 1938 the German army commissioned BMW and Zündapp to jointly develop a motorcycle and sidecar sharing common components to simplify maintenance and logistics. The result, the BMW R75, used a horizontally opposed 745cc twin-cylinder engine producing 26 hp at 4,000 rpm, giving a top speed of around 95 km/h (59 mph). A shaft drove both the rear wheel and the sidecar wheel, and twin gearboxes gave the combination separate road and off-road gear ranges, helping it prove reliable across a wide range of operating conditions after entering German Army service in 1941.
