About the H-16
First rolled out publicly in September 1953, the H-16 was conceived as a long-range rescue helicopter, but its load capacity - able to carry 40 troops, 32 litter patients or three Jeeps - drew Army and Air Force interest in it for broader military use. On January 5, 1956, the second YH-16 prototype crashed near Philadelphia after a bearing failure caused its rotor shaft to fail, killing both test pilots and leading to the program's cancellation, along with the planned 69-passenger H-16B variant.
