Description
During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Shogun Warlords - vicious rulers of Japan with samurai armies - created paper currency called hansatsu, or "clan notes" due to a severe coin shortage. Soon after, other local rulers followed suit to generate financial income, create a monopoly, and assist their impoverished samurai. Hand-printed with wood blocks on vertical notes, most hansatsu had the same value of gold, silver, and copper coins. 1 Momme Nanto equaled 3.75 grams of silver.
