About the M40 Gun Motor Carriage
Built on a widened and lengthened Sherman medium tank chassis and powered by a Continental R975 air-cooled radial engine, the M40 mounted the 155mm Long Tom gun in an open-topped fighting compartment for an eight-man crew. It gave U.S. forces long-range, heavy-caliber fire support, and after entering service late in World War II it went on to see extensive action in the Korean War.
