Given his early understanding of the importance of tank warfare, it should not be a surprise that three U.S. tanks would later be named after General Patton. The M48 is one of them. Having an almost forty year run of production from the 1950s to the 1990s, the M48 saw action in multiple U.S. conflicts, most notably the Vietnam War. Some 12,000 Pattons were manufactured, and it remains in service with ten national militaries. The "A3" variant features a diesel engine and a new fire control system.
