About the Maple
Most maple trees grow to a height of 33 to 148 feet and are prized for their autumn leaf color. The maple's winged seeds, known as samaras or "whirlybirds," spin as they fall, an effect that inspired a World War II U.S. Army airdrop device: a rotary-wing supply carrier, shaped like a maple seed, that could deliver up to 65 pounds of supplies by spinning to the ground without a parachute.
