The world's first operational jet, the Me 262 was a German aircraft that, while revolutionary, arrived too late and in too few numbers to change the outcome of World War II. The Allies were also able to counter the Me 262's effectiveness by attacking it on the ground and during takeoffs and landings. After the war, however, the fighter was taken by American and Soviet engineers and examined, helping each country develop more reliable jet technology.
