The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft and one of the most advanced combat planes of World War II. Introduced by Germany in 1944, it was powered by two Junkers Jumo turbojet engines, enabling speeds exceeding 540 miles per hour—far faster than any Allied piston-engine fighter. The Me 262 was heavily armed with four 30 mm cannons and could also carry air-to-air rockets, making it highly effective against Allied bomber formations. Its exceptional speed and firepower gave it a significant technological advantage, but limited production, fuel shortages, and engine reliability problems restricted its impact. Despite these challenges, the Me 262 revolutionized military aviation and influenced postwar jet fighter development worldwide.
