The Shenyang J-5, known by its NATO reporting name "Fresco," was a Chinese-built version of the Soviet MiG-17 fighter. Produced under license beginning in the 1950s, the J-5 became one of the People's Republic of China's earliest domestically manufactured jet fighters. Powered by a single turbojet engine, it was capable of transonic speeds and excelled in maneuverability, particularly at low to medium altitudes. The aircraft was armed with cannon for air-to-air combat and could also carry bombs or rockets for ground-attack missions. Though relatively simple in design, the J-5 played a significant role in strengthening China's early jet forces and was widely exported to allied nations. It served for decades in various air forces, valued for its durability, ease of maintenance, and effectiveness in close-range engagements.
