Stan Stokes. Colonel Billy Mitchell, America's Air Service Chief during World War I, organized the era's largest air armada in September of 1918. With a fleet of nearly 1,500 warbirds, the Allies began the St. Mihiel Offensive, one of history's first coordinated air-ground campaigns. This colorful print — signed by the artist — depicts DH.4 fighters of the 11th Aero Squadron, on the way to their target, being intercepted and attacked by Fokker D.VIIs. Despite the overall success of the offensive, the 11th Aero Squadron was decimated by war's end. 16"x 11½".
