The Morane-Saulnier MS.406 was France's principal single-seat fighter at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Designed by the firm Morane-Saulnier it was a low-wing monoplane of mixed construction combining a metal frame with fabric-covered rear sections. Powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Y liquid-cooled V-12 engine the MS.406 could reach speeds of around 300 mph and was armed with a 20 mm cannon firing through the propeller hub supplemented by two wing-mounted machine guns. Though maneuverable and pleasant to fly it was outclassed by faster more heavily armed German fighters during the Battle of France. Nevertheless it served with distinction in 1940 and continued operating with several air forces in Europe and beyond.
