About the P-40 Warhawk and the Flying Tigers
Boyington resigned his U.S. Marine Corps commission to join the American Volunteer Group, the "Flying Tigers," in August 1941, flying the P-40 against Japanese aircraft in the China-Burma-India theater with the 1st Pursuit Squadron. He left the AVG in April 1942 and later rejoined the Marine Corps, where he commanded the famed "Black Sheep" squadron and was awarded the Medal of Honor. The P-40, known for its rugged Allison-engine design and distinctive shark-mouth nose art, was vital to early Allied air operations in North Africa, the Pacific, and the China-Burma-India theater.
