Designed to meet a USAAC need for a heavy fighter, the P-47D Thunderbolt had a "bubble-top" canopy rather than the "razorback" fuselage for better visibility. Nicknamed "Jug" or "Juggernaut," it was known as the heaviest single-engine WWII fighter.
