About the Book
Following the administrative and military reforms of Emperors Diocletian and Constantine I, the Roman Army's old legion and auxiliary structure gave way to mobile field armies and garrison troops, with growing numbers of allied "barbarian" recruits. Drawing on archaeological evidence and the Notitia Dignitatum, the book traces the eastern Roman military from these reforms through the fall of the last western emperor, Romulus Augustulus, in AD 476.
