About the scene
A typical Anglo-Saxon village housed about 100 residents in single-family huts of wood with thatched roofs, encircled by a high fence meant to keep livestock safe from forest predators such as wolves and boars and to offer some protection against raiders. Viking raiders commonly burned the flammable wood-and-wattle-and-daub settlements they encountered; stone churches are among the few structures that survive from the period.
