Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader spiritual figure and respected warrior who became one of the most prominent Indigenous leaders of the American West. Born around 1831 in present-day South Dakota he resisted the expansion of the United States onto Lakota lands and opposed the reservation system. Sitting Bull is best known for his role during the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877. He supported the Lakota and their allies in resisting U.S. military campaigns and his leadership was closely associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn where Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer's forces were defeated. After years of resistance and exile in Canada Sitting Bull returned to the United States. He later joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show before returning to the Standing Rock Reservation where he was killed in 1890.
