In an effort to modernize the Vietnamese People's Air Force (VPAF), they ordered 12 Su-27SK Flankers from Russia in 1994. The first two aircraft arrived in May 1995, while the others came in 1996 with an additional request for two more placed in 1996. Based at Phan Rang AB, the original 12 aircraft served the 937th Fighter Regiment/370th Fighter Division. In 1998, Su-27 (#6007) had been lost in a crash, and eventually the remaining aircraft transferred to the 935th FR at Bien Hoa.
