Wachholz. It was a beautiful summer day on Saturday, July 24th in 1915, and plans were carefully made for the fifth annual midsummer event which included 7,000 employees of the Western Electric Company's Hawthorne Works. However, the long-awaited excursion across Lake Michigan on the SS Eastland quickly turned into a horrible tragedy. With more than 2,500 passengers on board, nearly 850 people lost their lives as the ship, still tied to the wharf, had somehow rolled into the Chicago river. 128 pages, 200 B&W photos, 6½"x 9¼", softcover.
