About the battle
In January 1943, Soviet forces launched offensives aimed at retaking the industrial city of Kharkov and destroying the German and Axis armies remaining in southern Ukraine following the encirclement at Stalingrad. Field Marshal Erich von Manstein was ordered to hold the region, and the three Waffen-SS divisions of the SS Panzer Corps — Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, Das Reich and Totenkopf — fought together for the first time during the resulting battles, helping secure the railway network south of Kharkov before the city itself was recaptured by German and Axis forces. The book presents an illustrated account of this phase of the fighting on the Eastern Front.
