America's 41st president, George H.W. Bush devoted his life to his country — from his Navy service in World War II through his impressive political career as a congressman, CIA director, UN ambassador, and vice president. During the Second World War, he was assigned to VT-51 stationed on the USS San Jacinto beginning in September 1943. In August of the following year, Bush piloted one of four TMB Avengers assigned to attack Chichijima. During the attack, he was struck by anti-aircraft fire and bailed out over the water where he was eventually rescued by a U.S. submarine, the USS Finback. Bush would finish the war having flown 58 combat sorties and would win the Distinguished Flying Cross.
