Stan Stokes. The North American P-51 Mustang was arguably the Allies' most successful fighter of World War II, accounting for nearly 5,000 enemy takedowns. The famous warbird also proved indispensable at escorting daytime bombing missions over Nazi-occupied territory. This print shows a P-51D Mustang flown by Col. William Bailey of the 353rd Fighter Group escorting B-17 Flying Fortresses of the mighty Eighth Air Force over the French countryside in late 1944. This 16"x 11½" print is signed by the artist.
