The UH-1 Huey — the first turbine-powered helicopter to enter service with the U.S. military — was originally developed in the early 1950s to meet Army standards for a medical evacuation and utility helicopter. Beginning production in March of 1960, its first combat was during the Vietnam War where it was ultimately outfitted as a gunship equipped with rockets, grenades launcher, and machine guns. More than 16,000 have been manufactured and it remains in limited service today.
