The last American battleship built on the West Coast, the USS California was launched in November of 1919. She was struck and sunk during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, but was amazingly salvaged and reconstructed, eventually successfully serving in the Pacific Theater — in Saipan and the Philippines, among other locations — during the final two years of the war. The USS California was decommissioned in 1947 and sold for scrap in 1959.
