About USS Franklin
Franklin survived kamikaze strikes off Formosa in October 1944 before returning to combat, then suffered catastrophic damage on March 19, 1945, when a single Japanese dive bomber hit her with two bombs off the coast of Japan. Sources vary on the exact death toll from that attack, with estimates ranging from roughly 725 to over 800 of her crew, but Franklin survived under her own power, one of the most heavily damaged US carriers to make it through the war.
