Commissioned in September 1937, the USS Yorktown (CV-5) took part in some of America's earliest offensives of the Second World War in early 1942. She infamously met her demise at the hands of a Japanese submarine during that summer's Battle of Midway — in commemoration, the U.S. Navy named their CV-10 Essex-Class carrier in honor of the fallen warship.
