About the B-26 Marauder
Despite early nicknames like "Widow Maker" stemming from a high accident rate during initial pilot training, the B-26 Marauder went on to post the lowest combat loss rate of any U.S. Army Air Forces bomber in World War II. The 320th Bombardment Group, which included the 444th Bombardment Squadron, received a Distinguished Unit Citation for a May 12, 1944 attack on Axis troop concentrations near Fondi, Italy, in support of the Allied advance on Rome.
