The Grumman E-2 Hawkeye, a tactical Airborne Early Warning aircraft, took its first flight in 1960. Mostly used by the U.S. Navy, the E-2 offered surveillance and airborne early warning of enemy aircraft attacks. On October 1, 1968, VAW-125 was appointed as the "Torch Bearers" but was then changed to "Tiger Tails." They became the very first east coast squadron to fly the E-2B Hawkeyes and was transferred to Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3) aboard USS Saratoga.
