The Vought F4U-1D Corsair flown by Lt. (jg) Ira Kepford of VF-17 Jolly Rogers in 1944 was a powerful carrier-based fighter known for its speed ruggedness and distinctive gull-wing design. Equipped with a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine and six .50 caliber machine guns the Corsair excelled in both air combat and ground attack. Kepford credited with 16 aerial victories flew this aircraft marked with the squadron's signature skull-and-crossbones insignia and his personal victory markings. Operating primarily in the Solomon Islands his skill and aggression in the F4U-1D made him one of the U.S. Navy's top-scoring aces of WWII.
