About the Fiat G.55 and its squadron
The Fiat G.55 Centauro was a single-seat Italian fighter that entered service late in the Second World War, with only around 275 built, but proved to be a capable high-altitude interceptor. The Squadriglia "Montefusco-Bonet," flying G.55s from Venaria Reale airport near Turin, was a fighter unit of the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana formed in January 1944, later renamed in memory of its commander after he was killed in combat.
