About the Gladiator and No. 72 Squadron

The Royal Air Force's last biplane fighter, the Gloster Gladiator featured an enclosed cockpit, a radial engine and four .303-inch machine guns, and remained in front-line use into the early years of World War II, serving in Norway, North Africa and the defense of Malta. No. 72 Squadron reformed at RAF Tangmere in February 1937 with Gladiators before moving to RAF Church Fenton in Yorkshire as part of the RAF's pre-war expansion, later converting to Supermarine Spitfires ahead of the Battle of Britain.
