About loading an 18th-century musket
Muskets of the period were fitted with a ramrod carried below the barrel in small retainers called pipes. By the mid-18th century most military muskets used steel ramrods, which were less prone to swelling in wet weather than earlier wooden versions. In the twelve-step loading and firing sequence, the ramrod was drawn to seat the powder and ball firmly at the breech before being returned to the pipes.
