About the Yamato
Commissioned in 1941, the Yamato was armed with nine 18.1-inch guns, the largest naval artillery ever mounted on a warship, and remains the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleship ever built. It was sunk by American carrier aircraft on April 7, 1945, during Operation Ten-Go, a one-way sortie intended to defend Okinawa.
