Six M8 HMCs were assigned to the American mechanized cavalry squadron. The armored division's reconnaissance squadron "Assault Gun Troop" was equipped with eight M8 HMCs. Even though these units were assigned to assault operations, the M8 HMC was not considered an assault weapon. Instead, it was used for direct and/or indirect fire power supporting ground troops.
