About the G4M "Betty"
Designed for long-range maritime bombing and reconnaissance, the G4M1 first flew in 1939 and entered Imperial Japanese Navy service in the early 1940s. It is best known for its role, alongside the older G3M "Nell," in sinking the British battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse off Malaya on December 10, 1941 — the first capital ships sunk by aircraft while under way at sea. Lightly armored and lacking self-sealing fuel tanks, it earned Allied aircrews' derisive nickname "the Flying Cigar" for how easily it caught fire.
