About the USS Pittsburgh
Commissioned in October 1944, USS Pittsburgh (CA-72) deployed to the Pacific in early 1945 and assisted in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns, earning two Battle Stars for her World War II service. After brief further service in the early 1950s, she was decommissioned for good in 1956.
